NO METALLIC: The creative process of Edras Francisco Rodriguez Portales.
A beautiful video of Cuban artist Yasiel Elizagaray working in his studio with his young son Bian (and their dog Azabache):
An international project between Cuba and Canada, the exhibition opened on December 26th, 2016 and will continue until January 26th, 2017. After this, the show will leave the island for a special presentation in Ottawa, Canada in the spring of 2017.
While Edras' work juxtaposes industrial atrophy and natural rebirth using meticulously hand cut materials on canvases painted in acrylic tones of rust and metalic neglect, the often monochromatic canvases of Adonis present an urban architecture that is undeniably in decay while still proudly surviving against the odds.
Opening remarks with (l.to r.) Cubanocanadian Director Leif Walther, Casa del Joven Creadore Director Michel Garcia Magariño, Edras Francis Rodriguez and Adonis Toledo Torres
Snacks and designer beverages ("Cubanocanadian Summer", "Cubanocanadian Winter" catered by Yurien Lopez Reyes
(L) Leif Walther talks with Victor Echenagusia Peña, Municipal UNEAC President. (R) Artists Adonis Toledo Torres and Edras Francisco Portales compare notes
If you are unable to make it to the Trinidad edition of the show, please stay tuned to this websight or the Cubanocanadian Facebook page for the Canadian dates.

Beginning October 17th, Carlos Cesar Roman will be participating in a group show of Cuban artists in Santa Monica, California presented by the Santa Monica Art Studios at their ARENA1 GALLERY.
Curated by Sandra Levinson of New York City's Centre for Cuban Studies as part of the West Coast presence of the Centre's CUBAN ART SPACE, the show will feature mixed media works that make use of "recycled" materials.
According to Arena1's press release:
"Much of the art in this exhibition incorporates recycled and found materials, an aesthetic summed up by internationally renowned Cuban artist Roberto Diago this way: “During the economic crisis, we didn’t have the materials you need to paint like we were taught in school, so we adapted our art to what we could find.” He and other artists discovered that this experience in the ‘90s changed their art for the better, broadening their vision not only in the use of the new "found" materials, but also in new concepts.
Carlos will be in very good company, as the exhibition will feature many of Cuba's current leading artist, including:
Manuel Mendive, Mabel Poblet, Roberto Diago, Kadir López , Abel Barroso, Sandra Ceballos, Choco (Eduardo Roca), Aimée García, Ernesto Javier Fernández, Alberto Lescay, Joel Jover, William Perez, Ernesto Rancańo, Adrian Rumbaut
MADE IN CUBA!/HECHO EN CUBA! Recycling Memory and Culture will run from Oct. 17 - Nov. 21 2015.
